Portland Area Emergency Preferences

This is a collection of Veterinary and Emergency Veterinary facilities in the Portland area, with our personal comments on their services. These are based from my personal experiences with each.

My recommendation for the standard Vet items is to shop around.  Over the past few years I have seen prices go out of control with what I call the "yuppie vets".  These are the ones who want more and more testing, the ones who seem to put the dollar before the dog.  I have seen a huge influx in un-necessary surgeries with these vets.  They seem to have lost the ability to assist a dog in healing an injury, and would rather jump to expensive surgery than do a bit of work in helping them to heal.  Again, this seems to be the situation I have consistently found with these vets who seem to care more for the money.

Here are a couple of evaluation items I use.  A typical Spay or Neuter does not require an over night stay and should be under $100 for the entire thing.  I find a spay should be around $80 and neuter around $60.  Dentals seem to be another place that the "yuppie vet" sect gets ya.  A complete dental including anesthetic and any teeth that have to be pulled should be under $150, even that is a bit on the high side.

Veterinary
  • Valley Veterinary Clinic
Offices in Rainer and Vernonia (Thurs)
    503-556-3084
Wonderful friendly folks.  Prices have gone up over the past year, but  most items are still reasonable.  Well worth the effort even if out of the way.  Great 24hr emergency care for their standing customers. Emergency care is not offered to those who are not current customers.
  • Midway Veterinary Hospital
Offices in Warren (on Hwy 30) and Vernonia (Wed and Sat)
    503-397-6470
    503-429-1612
Prices are reasonable and comparable.  Their spay/neuter prices fit within the guidelines indicated above.  The Vernonia office has wonderful friendly folks. They have later hours in St Helens, but not 24 hour emergency.
  • Companion - Forest Grove
    3043 Pacific Ave
    Forest Grove, OR 97116
    503-357-3638
I really like the Docs here.  Great for the quick stop.  Prices can be high for some items, but cheaper for others, same across the board in most Companion clinics.  Very reasonable spay/neuter prices well under the guidelines I have indicated above.
  • Companion - Hillsboro
    2055 SE Tualatin Valley Hwy
    Hillsboro, OR 97123
    (503) 693-1063
Had great help in an emergency situation.  Companion prices tend to be the same across the board.
  • Companion - Beaverton
    14292 SW Allen Blvd
    Beaverton, OR
    (503) 641-9151
Never tried these guys, but they are in a good location and I have heard good things.  Companion prices tend to be the same across the board.
  • North Plains Veterinary Clinic
10395 NW Glencoe Rd Suite 700
    North Plains, OR 97133
    (503) 647-0928
Very nice folks eager to help and very supportive of breeders.  Dr Tshi is very detailed in his explanations and examinations.  He really cares about giving good breeders the information they need; and totally accepts that sometimes breeders know more about their breed than he does.  Some prices on the high side and they do not offer 24hr emergency.
  Extended Hours Emergency Vet
  • Rock Creek
    1445 NW 185th Av
    Aloha, OR 97006
    (503) 645-4458
Very nice folks with late night hours.  This is definitely the first try with Tualatin the second.  The prices are reasonable for emergency care, but can be a bit on the high side for regular stuff.  The staff is very supportive.  You do not have to be a current client to use their emergency care.

24 hour Vet

  • Tualatin
    19314 SW Mohave Ct.
    Tualatin, OR 97062
    503-691-7922
Prices are average for emergency services, not as high as Dove Lewis.  Wonderful care.  They did a great job on a c-section and seem to be very supportive of breeders. You do not have to be a current client to use their emergency care
  • Dove Lewis
    1984 NW Petty Grove
    Portland, OR 97209
    (503) 228-7281

VERY expensive for not much care and not the best service.  Demands a high dollar deposit even before they look at or treat the animal.  Find it easer to put a critical patient down then to give them the care that they deserve (speaking from personal experience).  I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT recommend them.
